What I’ve Learned as a New Retiree
Hello, my name is Lisa and I’m the creator of Better Money Solutions.
I recently retired after a long career in a financial-related industry. My goal with BMS is to provide simple financial guidance and practical ideas for people at all stages of their financial journey.
As someone who retired only a few months ago, I understand how overwhelming retirement planning can feel. There are so many moving parts—income planning, taxes, healthcare, Medicare, Social Security, estate planning, required minimum distributions, Roth conversions, and more.
What I’ve learned is that while retirement planning can seem incredibly complex at first, it does begin to make sense over time. The more time you spend learning and organizing your thoughts, the more manageable it becomes.
One of the best things you can do is start planning earlier than you think you need to. Knowledge builds confidence, and having time on your side allows you to make decisions more thoughtfully instead of feeling rushed.
Many people approaching retirement focus heavily on reaching a certain savings number or replacing their exact paycheck. While those things matter, I believe one of the most important things you can understand is your spending. Knowing your essential expenses and understanding the lifestyle you want to maintain can help bring much more clarity to retirement planning.
Some people prefer working with a financial advisor while others enjoy taking a more hands-on approach. There are also many online planning tools available today that can help organize information and explore different scenarios. I’ve personally experienced both approaches and believe there can be value in each.
Over time, I hope to continue building a library of retirement-related topics here on BMS in a way that feels approachable and understandable without overwhelming people with unnecessary complexity.
I won’t pretend retirement planning is simple. It can absolutely feel stressful, especially with the fear of making mistakes. But retirement can also be an exciting new chapter filled with flexibility, freedom, and new possibilities.
You do not need to understand everything all at once. Feeling confused at times is normal, and with patience, your understanding and confidence can grow over time.
